The Machame Route, nicknamed “Whiskey Route”, is one of the most popular hiking routes on Kilimanjaro. It offers some of the most stunning vistas, including the eerie Dendrosenecio forest, the steep Barranco Wall and the spooky Lava Tower. The latter provides for optimal acclimatization, following the “climb high and sleep low” rule.

While the Machame Route can be completed in a minimum of six days—this relatively short time also being one of the reasons for its popularity—it is advisable to add an extra day or two to allow for better acclimatization. Taking more time reduces the risk of altitude sickness and increases the chance of summit success.
